Large-sized lucanid beetle. Body length 3.6-9.0 cm in
male and 3.4-4.8 cm in female. Similar to D. formosanus
in appearance. Dorsum of thorax and elytra with slightly

of this species and its relatives please consult taxonomists
of the institutions listed in Appendix 5 of this book. |
Distribution
Widely distributed in the primary forests at about 500-2000
m in elevation. |
Habitat and Ecology
The habitat and biology of this species may be similar
to the former species. Adults appear from April to August
and attracted by light. For more detail in larval and
adult morphology and biological observations see Chang
(1993), Wang (1994) and Mizunuma & Nagai (1994). |
Threats and Conservation Status
Refer to the former species. |
Remarks ome lucanid species (e.g. Dorcus miwai Benesh and Odontolabis siva Hope & Westwood, Figs. 218-219) or beetles (e.g. Allomyrina dichotoma Linnaeus, Fig. 220) have often been confused with protected Dorcus species by the mass media for years. It is here strongly recommended that any identification for resembling species should consult taxonomists of the institutions listed in Appendix 5 of this book.
