Diagnosis
Wingspan of this genus 15-20 cm, sexually dimorphic in
colouration. Forewing very elongate, ground colour black,
with a series of submarginal triangular metallic green
patches; underside of forewing bearing a series of metallic
blue and white patches; hindwings much smaller than forewing,
with a single metallic green area in discoidal cell; underside
of hindwing having metallic blue stripes near Sc and Cu
veins. |
Distribution
Endemic to the major islands and areas belonging to the
Sundaland, e.g. Malaysian Peninsula, Borneo, Sumatra,
and Palawan of the Philippines. |
Habitat and Ecology
This genus has nly two species, Trogonoptera brookiana
(Wallace, [1856]) (紅頸鳥翼蝶) (Figs. 79-82) and Trogonoptera
trojana (Honrath, 1886) (巴拉望紅頸鳥翼蝶) (Figs. 83-86) recognized.
They usually soar in tropical forests. The males are well-known
for their aggregated behavior of licking water along creeks.
Females visit flowers of various plant families. The larvae
of both species utilize Aristolochia spp. as hostplant. |
Threats and Conservation Status
The whole genus is categorized into the Appendix II of
the CITES, and as well trading is limited by the European
Union. The threats mainly come from over-collecting and
unlimited deforestation in Malaysia, Borneo and Indonesia.
It is said some efforts of captive breeding have being
conducted while such information have never been positively
proved. |
