Distribution
According to Suzuki, this species (or species complex) is only restricted to Taiwan.
Habitat and Ecology
This species complex inhabits in the primary forests from low to medium elevation. The adults are day-flying and seldom attracted by light. The ecology of this species complex in Taiwan has never been surveyed. For further ecological information about this genus see Ohira & Fukaishi (1999).
Threats and Conservation Status
Status This species complex is not very rare in the wild and has many related species ranging throughout the surrounding areas of Taiwan (Li & Yang, 1997). However, due to their brilliant colouration, this species may be threatened by over-collecting and deforestation.
Remarks
According to Suzuki (1999), the so-called "Campsosternus gemma" from Taiwan are in fact composed of two resembling species, which are distinct from the true Campsosternus gemma Candeze (朱肩麗叩甲)(Figs. 197-199) from northern China by subtle morphological differences. In his study, Campsosternus gemma watanabei Miwa (Figs. 200-201; see also Chang, 1999) was upgraded to species status--Campsosternus watanabei Miwa (渡邊青叩頭蟲、渡邊虹彩叩頭蟲). In addition, he stated that an undescribed species (Fig. 202) has been identified as Campsosternus gemma in various literature (e.g. Kishii, 1995; Wang, 1993: 90-91; Lien, 1999: 129; Chang, 2000). Before his forthcoming study is formally published, we suggest to treat this species as a species in broad sense without changing its status in the protected species list.
