外殼特徵 T. gigas is the largest known species of bivalves. Shellreaching about 140cm in length; suboval to fan-shaped inoutlines; angle formed at umbo by hinge line and ventralmargin usually exceeding 150o; moderately to stronglyinflated and with small to nearly closed byssal orifice.Valves moderately thin in small specimens to extremelyheavy and thick in large individuals; color grayish white;encrusted with vermetids, annelid tubes, coral, corallinealgae and other orgamisms.

地理分布 The Philippines to Micronesia. Lives on coral reefs, indepths of from only a few feet to several fathoms.

模式產地 Linnaeus' reference to a large specimen of T. gigasweighing 240 kg, preserved in the "Museum Ulricae" is theonly clue to the location of the type of this species. The typelocality given by Linnaeus is restricted to Amboina,Moluccas.

備註 This species was listed in the CITES Appendix II on 29th July1983. The photo-specimen was collected from the south tipof Taiwan and was inventory in the Malacology Lab.,Institute of Zoology, Academia Sinica, Taipei, Taiwan。
